You’re Not Lazy—You’re Overwhelmed

A Therapist’s Reframe on Burnout, Trauma, and Emotional Exhaustion

You’re Not Lazy. You’re Carrying Too Much.

If you’ve ever caught yourself saying, “I’m just being lazy”—pause.

Because chances are, you’re not lazy.

You’re overwhelmed. Overextended. Overstimulated. And maybe even grieving.

At CFM Wellness, I hear this all the time from women who are holding it all together—on paper—but falling apart inside. They come to therapy convinced that something is wrong with them for struggling to complete tasks, focus at work, or get out of bed. But this isn’t failure. It’s a flag: your body is asking for something different.

Why We Confuse Overwhelm with Laziness

Many of us, especially Black women, mothers, and caregivers, are taught to push through. Hustle culture, trauma, and generational expectations can convince us that rest is weakness and slowness is failure.

But the truth is:

Laziness is not a character flaw. It’s often a nervous system response to burnout, trauma, or unmet needs.

Signs You Might Be Overwhelmed (Not Lazy)

  • You feel foggy or paralyzed by simple tasks
  • You constantly beat yourself up for “not doing enough”
  • You feel exhausted even after sleeping
  • You’ve stopped finding joy in things you used to love
  • You’re emotionally reactive, checked out, or numb
  • You often think, “What’s wrong with me?”

This is your body whispering, “I’m at capacity.” Therapy helps you listen before it starts screaming.

3 Gentle Questions to Reframe the Shame

Next time you feel the “lazy” voice creep in, try asking:

  1. What am I carrying that no one sees? Invisible labor, caregiving, racial stress, grief, and chronic survival mode all count.
  2. What would I say to a loved one in this same situation?

Spoiler: it wouldn’t be, “You’re lazy.”

  3. What does my body need right now: rest, regulation, or support?
    Often, it’s all three.
